I invite you to experience your life more fully, moment by moment, through the use of writing exercises and pieces for reflection. I invite you to cultivate a relationship with yourself. You are your lifelong companion, from birth until death. You may as well befriend yourself. Writing is a wonderful way to develop this friendship. Mindfulness grants greater intimacy and familiarity with the world and ourselves. By becoming aware of the present moment, our bodies, and our internal responses, we learn to face ourselves and the world with equanimity. By facing our fears and darkness, we gain compassion, empathy and the freedom to move forward. Understanding impermanence and accepting that this too will pass frees us to take bold action. Knowing that we are a microcosm of the world, containing both darkness and light helps us cast a more forgiving eye on ourselves and this world. By becoming aware of how transient everything is, we learn to cherish each moment. My books are an outgrowth of my psychiatric practice. Many of the people who come to see me are extremely self-critical. A major part of our work together is to shift their perspective and imagination towards themselves, their relationships and the world. I encourage them to be curious about themselves, to offer compassion and care to themselves as they would a friend. Mindful Writing Embracing Transience is designed to assist readers in relating to themselves and the world with more curiosity, compassion, care and wonder. It offers writing prompts to explore your childhood, family history, past, present, future, dreams, relationships to people and to the world.

This book is indeed a gift - a present you can give to yourself, a friend, or to someone you love. Give it to someone who needs inspiration, to write, to create, to look at their world from a new perspective, to work on change; or to someone who is trying to heal from a difficult time or event. Or leave it lying around for people who could benefit from its introspection and extro(?)spection, its willingness to look at the inner self as mindfully as at the outside world.

Mindful Writing is a unique combination of characteristics and purposes. It teaches about mindfulness - more by showing than by telling, which is a good thing - ; it includes several pages of writing prompts and exercises for mindful and personal writing; it includes some meditation exercises, and most of all, it is a collection of the author's own mindful writings: Observant descriptive poems, narrative poems, and several prose pieces, narrative and reflective.

While the cover and intro of the book don't reveal much about its author, readers get to know her once they begin reading. Mostly in poetic form, in a voice both youthful and wise, she shares her experiences as a medical student, a psychiatry intern, a therapist, a daughter, mother, sister, wife and friend. The book celebrates the self, meaningful human relationships, nature, change, and of course transience and mindfulness. It's also wonderfully disarming in its embrace of imperfection: in nature, humanity, and in herself. It is a very peaceful, meditative book - but that doesn't mean it simplistically advocates positive thinking. Instead, it pays attention to a wide range of human experience and emotion, each poem observing deeply and carefully: weather, seasons, children, weeds, trees, birds and other small animals, emotions, body parts, therapy, addiction, racism, ethical dilemmas, inspiring people, and more.

The book begins with - and also is in itself, an invitation to use writing as a way to experience life more (mind)fully, and also a way to get to know yourself and make friends with yourself. A wonderful poem accompanies this invitation, followed by a persuasive list of the therapeutic benefits of daily writing. I couldn't agree more with this list, especially when it comes to the healing powers of writing.

Mixed in with the poems, there are other gems, such as a child self and a wise self meditation, quotes about nature, love, and relationships, as well as a fairy tale the author wrote as a college graduate, and now interprets from a different perspective. One of the things I like best about the book is that it practices what it "preaches" (and it doesn't, of course, preach anything): most poems are example responses to questions that invite readers to write their own. They come in many different styles and rhythms; not all are perfectly polished pieces, but they all contain wonderful insights, observations, and imagery. While many feature enticing nuggets of mystery, they are not obscure, abstract, or intimidating to read. They make poetry accessible and invite the reader to look at their lives and the lives around them with poetic eyes.

If I had to pick a favorite poem (which would be difficult), I'd choose the one about therapy as a literary enterprise. It invites us to think of the relationship between literature and psychology, therapy and reading or writing. Overall, I have only one small complaint: I would've liked page numbers!

Mindful Writing Embracing Transience Kani Ilangovan MD 9781477419144 Books Reviews

Dr. Ilangovan has combined writing and healing in the most unique ways. I have never seen such an approach before and find it encouraging, thought provoking, and soothing. She expresses aspects of life as a mother, professional doctor, wife and her other relationships. She sometimes intertwines her scientific knowledge with her personal feelings and thoughts on relationships. to encourage the reader to use poetry for healing, she gives brief writing prompts before her poems that help the reader without overwhelming or overshadowing the poetry itself. The prompts encourage and advise the reader on how to contemplate on and express about various aspects of his or her life to release emotion by the subsequent writing of poetry or prose. Her approach is refreshing from many angles. People I have recommended the book to have greatly enjoyed it.
Please give yourself this precious gem of a book, as a gift to celebrate life - yours, your friends, your loved ones, animals, nature. Everything about this book is appealing - from the beautifully photographed cover, to the thought provoking writing exercises, to the author's poignant and moving poems. The book offers stimulating writing exercises which encourage us to think, feel and reflect about what what is important to us, and how important every moment is. Following each writing exercise the author offers her own poems and other writings in response to the writing suggestions. The book touched me deeply - made me laugh, cry, and most of all, grateful to be alive. I especially appreciated the poems and writing exercises about relationships, with self and others. I plan to give it to the people I love, and to recommend it highly to my clients.

Mindful Writing Embracing Transience brings together the inspiring power of rich visual imagery and the soothing tranquility of contemplation. Dr. Kani Ilangovan's unique poetic voice seems to come from a wisdom borne of a commitment to integrity. She shows that Tagore's dichotomy between the colors of the world and meditation is a false one there is no conflict between enjoying the world and recognizing its transience.

Kani Ilangovan skilfully interweaves vivid descriptions of her own experiences, insights drawn from those experiences, and, perhaps most importantly, guidance. Her poetry gently demands that the reader respond, rather than merely consume. Her book demystifies "being in the moment" with clear and detailed writing exercises. As an academic in the Humanities, I find her approach both refreshing and challenging, and I highly recommend this book to anyone with writer's block, whether you are just starting out or have been jaded by years of arduous writing. She asserts through example that living, observing, contemplating and writing can be natural and therapeutic. This book has left me refreshed, bridged the difficult chasm between seeing and writing, and revived my appreciation for both.
A beautiful book inside and out! I love it. Mindful Writing Embracing Transience by Kani Ilangovan, M.D. is filled with poetry and prose as well as suggested visualizations and writing prompts centering around the themes of mindfulness, transience and healing. Many of her poems capture the beauty and significance of life's little moments the fragrance of a lilac tree, the sound of a frog, a child's joy about losing her first tooth. Other writings examine the bigger issues in life discrimination, relationships, loss. Ilangovan reveals her own struggles and joys in her writing, and by doing so, demonstrates how writing can lead to growth and healing. This book is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to discover the therapeutic power of expressive writing.
